Hydraulic Systems for a Cable System

Customer Requirements

Torishima Fluid Power were asked to provide a design and build service for a Cable Engine. The Cable Engine transfers and tensions subsea cable from a cable reel to carousels for loading onto a ship. The system needed hydraulic power and control, with a plc system for customer data transfer and remote operation.

Torishima Solution

Torishima Fluid Power provided a hydraulic power pack, control valves, cylinders and electrical control system.

The main requirements apart from the power to pull the cable were that the customer required to control the tension and also when the system was shut down the clamping force on the cable was maintained. The control system was important for the application and a Siemens plc was installed in the electrical panel. Feedback on the clamping force and tensions was provide by pressure transmitters and load cells. The hydraulic system included proportional pressure and flow control. Accumulators were provided to ensure the clamping pressure remained after 16 hours without power.
