Hydraulic Training Case Study
Enhancing Hydraulic Expertise for Balfour Beatty Rail's Engineers
Background
In November 2023, John Daulton, a representative of Torishima Fluid Power division based in Leamington Spa, engaged with Adie Summerscales, Engineering Manager at Balfour Beatty Rail's High Speed 1 (HS1) project. The HS1 team, responsible for the Repair and Maintenance of Network Rail’s On Track Machines (OTM), faced a challenge. Some engineers, previously from diverse industries such as HGV and Car repair, lacked fundamental knowledge of hydraulic systems essential for maintaining the high-speed railway line from London St Pancras to the Channel Tunnel in Kent.
Challenges
Adie Summerscales identified the need to equip his team with comprehensive hydraulic training. The engineers required an understanding of basic hydraulics and the ability to interpret hydraulic schematic drawings crucial for their responsibilities.
Solution
John Daulton proposed a tailored training solution provided by Torishima. Together, they designed a one-day course focusing on foundational hydraulic principles. The course syllabus included:
- Introduction to Hydraulic Systems
- Individual assessment of candidates' knowledge levels
- Overview of basic hydraulic system operations
- Interpretation of hydraulic symbols and schematic drawings
- Practical exercises involving fault finding and hydraulic circuit setup using the Hydraulic Training Rig
- Q&A session and feedback gathering
Adie Summerscales approved the syllabus and scheduled three sessions for three candidates at the Torishima Leamington Spa Training facility. Chris Brown, Torishima Fluid Power's General Manager, collaborated with John Daulton to deliver the course.
Implementation
Throughout November 2023, all three courses were successfully conducted. The candidates provided positive feedback, indicating an improved understanding of hydraulic systems, schematic drawings, and symbols. The tailored training effectively addressed their specific needs, enhancing their competence in hydraulic maintenance tasks.
Conclusion
Torishima offers a comprehensive range of hydraulic training courses, customizable to meet the specific requirements of customers and candidates. By integrating theoretical knowledge with practical experiences using the hydraulic training rig, Torishima ensures a holistic learning approach for hydraulic engineering professionals.
Through this collaboration, Balfour Beatty Rail's engineers acquired essential skills, contributing to the efficient maintenance and operation of High Speed 1 railway infrastructure. This case study exemplifies the efficacy of tailored training solutions in addressing industry-specific challenges and empowering engineering teams with requisite expertise.
