Applications for Hydraulic Accumulators

Hydraulic accumulators have been used in hydraulic systems for a number of years. One of the primary applications is in the storage of fluid to be used later in a machine cycle. A typical example is in a hydraulic press, where the are times during the press cycle that high pressure is needed with no flow. Also high flow is needed when the press is raised or lowered. So the accumulators can be charged with fluid when no flow is required and can discharge when the press is raising or lowering. This can lead to a smaller hydraulic pump and lower energy usage.

Accumulators can also be used to maintain pressure on industrial brakes to keep them powered off, and when the brakes are engaged the accumulator is vented.

Removing pressure spikes and pressure ripple is another application. When working in British Steel, with water hydraulics ram pumps, the pressure ripple was large and was causing failure of pipes. Some 5 litre bladder accumulators were installed and the pressure ripple was greatly reduced.

On large off road vehicles, accumulators are used in the supension systems.

There are multiple uses for hydraulic accumulators. Torishima Fluid Power are a supplier of Fox accumulators and we have many years of applications experience.
